As I’m sure you’re all aware, with the amount of single use waste in our modern world today living a life free of waste seems near on impossible but that’s only the case if we choose to believe it ourselves. The Earth still has a pulse and it’s our job to keep its heart beating. Where is the easiest place to start making a difference inside?? The kitchen!! With all the packaging and cooking that comes from the kitchen it inevitably produces the highest amount of waste in the house. Targeting the kitchen waste first is like taking the legs of a human, the rest will fall! Soooo, what to do and where to begin??

Food, over time it has become more plastic than it is nutritious, the answer to this is organisation and reusable storage. This allows you to, where you can purchase whole foods and keep them fresh yourself without the excess plastic. The organisation means that you can freely seek out foods that are sold loose without the need for any soft plastics at all. When it does come to packaged food that you require the reusable containers mean that you can buy in bulk!! Although this means that you’ll still generate some waste from your fuel for survival it equivalates to a more favourable ratio of food to plastic!

Leftovers

All of us have that time where you just can’t seem to devour the meal your eyes previously deceived you that you could. Wasting food means producing more, producing more equals greater emissions with emissions leading to direct pollution. Saving your meals is more important than ever, “If we look at the greenhouse gas emissions associated with food waste, it is equivalent to adding an additional 33 million average passenger vehicles to our roads every year,”- Marty Heller University of Michigan. This is alarming to say the least, but you can make sure you aren’t contributing to that stat very easily. Once again reusable containers are important but there are also a few alternatives to your everyday items that you can use and use almost forever!!

The first of these as pictured above is reusable silicone lids. These are airtight and cover plates containers and jars of all different shapes and sizes. Gladwrap is unnecessary, excessive and the cost will build up over a lifetime. Silicone lids on the other hand are durable, microwave safe, can be cleaned in the dishwasher and are super easy to use to keep your leftovers fresh.

Another easy yet sustainable option for food freshness over time is zip up silicone bags. These too are airtight and very convenient. The convenience with these are key, they are also machine washable and once you’ve used them once snaplock bags will remain replaced and silicone bags will be in the starting line up every day of the week!!

That’s the first two easy steps in the Kitchen!! More coming soon… If you want to check out any of these planet saving items click below!!
